My order from Köhres

In order to increase my list of weird plants or simply new plants, I've often ordered online. I discovered these website (Köhres) and I decided to give it a go, because they have quite a good selection of cacti and succulents.
In this order were seeds of Fockea edulis, schizobasis intricata, zygocactus, wittia amazonica, arthrocereus rondonianus, hoodia gordonii, caralluma russeliana, sarcostemma viminale, talinum caffrum and anigozanthos flavidus.

Here are some of seeds I've received.

Some are soaking now :)  I usually soak them with tap water, but for the schizobasis, talinum and anigozanthos, I've added some oxygenated water.
As I have received 100 seeds of anigozanthos, I soaked 50 seeds with tape water for a night and I soaked the other 50 for about one hour in warm water between 50 to 80 degrees Celsius I would say. Then I put them onto the soil (I haven't buried them). Let's see if they will germinate, they usually have a low rate germination.

I've put the asclepiads and some anigozanthos on a damp paper.

As always the asclepiads are germinating quickly. After the soaking, some had already sprouting (2 fockea, 2 hoodia and 2 caralluma). 2 or 3 more hoodia are germinating but I haven't put them into soil yet. So far only the sarcostemma shows no activity.

Here are some plant propagation I've done in the last 3 months.

In Mexico, Adenium have become a mode, lots of people have one and want one. The fact is that they are easy to cultivate in the climate we have and they offer many many flowers throughout the year. Furthermore they come in many different colours. So I decided to grow my own and sell them when they will be ready. So I ordered seeds from Thailand (100 seeds). Once I received them, I soaked them for a day and I put 50 seeds directly into soil and 50 on damp paper so I could monitor the sprouting. After only one day the first seeds began to sprout. As soon as they would sprout, I would put them into soil.

Below and above my two weeks old seedlings.

Here are some agave stricta and gasteria. I bought 25 seeds of agave stricta and 25 seeds of gasteria seeds. I have 3 agaves and 6 gasteria. I'm only a beginner at germinating, so I'm happy enough.

below and above are echinopsis (subdenudata y kermesina)

 below are some epiphyllum seedlings

In the middle of the roads, it is sometimes common to see plumeria and one day I was going back home, I realised that one had fruits. So I've been checking on the fruits to be able to get its seeds. One opened and I took the seeds and plant them. Plumeria seeds should be planted half into the soil with the papery thing outside like in my picture.

After about 10 days of nothing is happening, I checked them yesterday and here we are, in the second picture below, we can see a small root coming out of the seed. They are all sprouting, now I only have to wait to see the leaves coming out.

This is a gardenia cutting I've made. I have to be honest, I've tried twice to grow a gardenia and they died both times. However after my first attempt, I decided that I would try making cuttings if I were ever to grow a new one. After a year or two I bought a new gardenia and took some cuttings, I put them into water until they rooted (about 1-2 months) and then I put them into soil. This one is the only one still growing, the mother plant is actually also dead. It look quite healthy and it is growing so let see what will happen with it.

These are seedlings of Sauromatum venosum or voodoo lily. I bought some seeds on Ebay and I was surprised to see that out 10 seeds 9 germinated. Sadly one came up yellow (as in the first picture) so it died and one didn't come up well either so it died too. I'm left with 7 seedlings quite healthy as you can see in the 2nd picture.

One thing is sure, some bulbs don't give you many offsets. So after doing some research online I began to propagate bulbs by twin scaling. Basically I cut them in 4 or 6 or 8 and I put the pieces into soil and wait. I tried this on some bulbs of zephyranthes grandiflora, it worked pretty well, so I decided to try on a sprekelia bulbs when I received the bulbs I had ordered.

After a few weeks, from 5 pieces left, about 8 new bulbs are forming, and it might not be over. I have to wait some times more.

When I went to Merida, I found these seeds of Thevetia peruviana and I decided to take some home. I soaked them for 24 hours and I put them into soil. They sprouted after about 10 days. Most of them have two roots because they are polyembrionic, it means that one seed can give more than one embryo (more than one plant).

After another 15 days, most of them must be sprouted by now and I count 13 plants, which means that most of the 7 seeds gave me 2 seedlings.

Here are some tigridia, from 100 seeds I must have only about 25-30 seedlings growing. They took about 1 month to germinate, I sowed some on top of the soil and some about 1/4 of inch deep into the soil and both germinated, so I guess it doesn't really matter.

These are Trichocaulon annulatum. I soaked the seeds for a night and some had already germinated. From 10 seeds, only 3 germinated as you can see on the second picture, but they seem to do well.

Amaryllis
At the beginning of the year, I bought myself 3 Hippeastrum bulbs. I've never been lucky with Amaryllis, I can get them to flower once but I can't make them flower again.
Anyhow I decided to give it a try, also I was planning on propagating them, but for the moment I let them grow.

Amaryllis Bogota

 Amaryllis Neon

 Amaryllis Daphne

My three amaryllis at the same time blooming. I have to admit the Daphne is my favorite because of its color.

Since they begin to bloom, I've tried to pollinate them and look here are 4 seed pods from the Bogota. It didn't work on the others.

 I collected the seeds

I decided to try to germinate the seeds with two different manners. The first one, the floating method : basically you let the seeds float in water and wait. The second one, on top of soil. The second one kind of fail, it wasn't as efficient as the floating method, so I know how to do it next time.

After about 15 days, some seeds began to sprout a root as you can see in the picture below. Once the root was out, I would put them into soil.

All the germinated seeds so far. We can already see some leaves going out.

Now I will have to wait about 3-4 years to know the color of these amaryllis. Although they came from Amaryllis Bogota, it is not sure that they will come true to their parent, beside I used the pollen of the three amaryllis so I could have an hybrid between two amaryllis I got. It will be a surprise when the first flower will appear.
Presentation of my terrace/ garden

I live above my work in a small two rooms (a sleeping room and a kitchen) apartment but I do have a quite nice terrace and I use it as a garden.
Here are a few views of my terrace and also some specifics plants I have.

One of my adenium, they are my pride. They might not be that beautiful, but they flower so much, they just light up my terrace.

this begonia comes from the jungle in Mexico but it is so nice and big, I love it so much and it is giving some flowers.

Those hibiscus (the photos above and below) have been made from a cutting, they bloom the whole year. It is however such a shame that the flower lasts only one day.

this is a flower of a pomegranate tree. this small tree have been started from seed about three years ago and it gave me a flower after a year, nothing the second year, but this year it decided to give me quite a few flowers. Here were the 3 first one but some more buds are coming.

Today the first flower of my passionflower is open. I bought some passionfruits in July or August, I can remember and I saved some seeds that I sowed. They germinated quite well and I let 6 passionflowers grow. This is one is the biggest and gave me its first flower today. More are to come and I hope I'll have some passionfruits some time soon.

This orchid has been given to me by a friend that didn't want it. It has been blooming everywhere since 4 years and sometimes even twice a year. It is thanks to her that I decided to grow more orchids.
